Trial for 19-year-old accused of attacking grandmother in Kraaifontein delayed.
The trial against a 19-year-old man who allegedly attacked his grandmother has been delayed. Luvo Gqaza faced charges of causing serious harm with his assault. He was taken into custody after a video surfaced of him hitting his grandmother. Police tried to intervene a month ago, but the family declined their help.
Due to public outcry, Gqaza was eventually arrested. His defense requested that he be kept in the hospital section of Pollsmoor Prison due to concerns about his well-being. The National Prosecuting Authority also supported this move, as Gqaza is considered suicidal. He will return to court on 12 July for a bail hearing.
Almost everyone who watched the video was saddened by the young man’s actions. “This is a decline in morals in our society,” said someone. Rob Bisset, Chairman of the Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum, called the incident of elder abuse heinous. He stated that the CPF is taking this very seriously and is demanding the strictest punishment according to the law. He also expressed shock at the attacks on elderly citizens by their own family members, who are unable to defend themselves against the youth of today.
